Shadow Laughter is a collaboration between artists Hamish Marr and Martin Pearson. They exploit the visual language of film noir to create scenarios of mystery and intrigue. These scenarios are populated by a range of characters portrayed by the artists and occasionally by others. Episodes go out on facebook on a Thursday evening, and on this blog on a Friday. 'Viewers' are invited to leave comments which may influence or direct the forthcoming episodes. Join the adventure!

Behind the Scenes: Sealed!
Here we are again, back in the dining room...or are we? Perhaps we are on the shoreline, and that tablecloth is really the foamy water washing up over the rocks, as the sun goes down behind the distant cliffs...
(Above: test shot)
But look, who are these two strange characters hunched over the chess board? One is clearly royal, sporting a crown that was previously a prop in an unusual arts variety event, and the other is clearly Death from a well-known movie, as he is wearing a hoodie.
The king is clearly an expert, consulting his clever-moves compendium, but Death seems to be struggling to keep up... What will be the thrilling conclusion? Will the king get one over on Death? Has Death got something up his extensive sleeve?
(Set-up shot, getting scythe-like shadows from our ready-made
prop. It was just the right scythe for our purposes.)
Stay tuned, and join the adventure!

Behind the Scenes: Why? WHY?
Scrabble is a great, fun game for all the family, right? However, when Shadow Laughter get their hands on it, things take a far more serious turn...
Regular viewers may well recognise the setting for this week's episode; it's the dining table at Martin's house, which has featured in many previous episodes. Whilst its performance has always been wooden, it has been solid and reliable.
Here are some setting-up shots we did, whilst we sorted out the lighting and the camera settings:
Below: The kind of words you might expect to be played in this context.
The two other players were taking a short break, for some mysterious reason.
We toyed with the idea of unusual camera angles for this shoot, but in the end, went with some low-angle shots, amongst others.

We like a fair amount of texture, and dressing the set allows for this. The lycra bag of letters was especially useful, we found.

Tune in Monday, for the thrilling yet educational conclusion to Double Word Danger!
